GRAND TOUR Pocket Square

The Grand Tour was a journey in stages, developed from 1400 onwards throughout Europe, necessary to complete the formation of the young aristocracy. Italy, cradle of the Renaissance, became the center of European cultural and artistic life, hosting in its courts a large number of foreign travelers. In 1700 a renewed interest in classical art placed Sicily at the center of the attention of European cultural life, and for the first time, the Gran Tour overcame the traditional boundaries of Rome and Naples to continue its itinerary up to this rich land of history and myth, which unfolded luxuriantly to the astonished travelers. “Sicily is the dot on the i of Italy, the rest of Italy seems to me only a stalk placed to support a similar flower”. (Friedrich M. Hessemer, Letters from Sicily)
